Early Spanish Stamps

Overview

The first Spanish postages were issued in 1850, vignette depicting portrait of Queen Isabella II of Spain. Five stamps were officially issued on 1^st. January, 1850 comprises face values of 6 Cuartos, 12 Cuartos, 5 Reales, 6 Reales and 10 Reales. These stamps were engraved, imperforated and printed on wove paper.

There were printed more than 200 different face values from late 15^th to 19^th Century. Low cost printing on that time and easy to replicate was influence on quick release for new issuance in order to avoid counterfeit.
