Overview

The Ceres of France stamp was the 9th oldest stamps in the world. The first issuance was printed on  1st January, 1849. Six stamps were officially issued in 1849 to 1851 comprises face values of 10c, 15c, 20c, 25c, 40c and 1F. These stamps were engraved, imperforated, printed on wove paper and used typography technique.

·         10c not in the listing.
·         20c,25c and 1F cancellation were Type 1.
·         15c cancellation was Type 2.
·         40c cancellation was Type 3.

Rare Cancellation

Type 1 Cancellation: The ealiest common cancellation was a diamond-shaped grill of six smaller diamonds. This grill cancellation came into used with the Ceres issued in 1849.

Type 2 Cancellation: This cancellation was known as etoile cancel came into used with the Ceres in 1849. This cancellation was consisted of a grid and 6-pointed star.

Type 3 Cancellation: This cancellation was known as endless grill cancel came into used with the Ceres issued beginning of 1851. The grill was comprised of small parallelograms, five rows deep and endless.

Ceres Bordeaux Issue

The Ceres Head concept was kept until 1875 and it was printed only in Bordeaux (1870~1871) and in Paris (1871~1875). The new denomination stamps were printed by using old material.

Ceres (1937~1941)

During the philatelic exhibition in Paris on 1937, a minisheet of four bicoloured Ceres stamps was issued. The next year in 1938, began a new Ceres series with high values from 1.75F to 3 F was issued.
