Early Czechoslovakia Stamps

Exploration of European Stamps

Plate II, Position 89 of 100

Overview

The republic was established after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918. From 1939 to 1945, its western parts were the German protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Slovakia was independent and Sub Carpathian Ruthenia, in the east of the republic was granted to the Soviet Union. Currency 100 Haleru = 1 Korunia.

The first stamps were issued in October 1918, depicting the Hradcany Castle in Prague with the sun symbolically rising behind it is synonymous with the birth of the new state though the sun does not actually rise behind the castle. Designed by Alphonse Mucha, an exponent of Art Nouveau living in Prague.
