Error stamps could be detected either through out visual inspection
or use tools like a magnifying glass or scanner, indeed. In philately, a famous
terminology prior to classify of the error stamps is so-called EFO – Errors, Freaks and Oddities, a term referring to all kinds of
things that goes wrong when producing stamps. It's encompasses the whole major
designs of error stamps and printing with poor quality or mistake. Stamps that
have major uncertainty in comparison with the acceptance quality could be considered as errors, it's caused
during printing process which do not show the intended appearance of the
desired design or having abnormality.
Major Errors that something would be
seen easily or clearly without referring to the acceptance quality or display strange features in comparison with the catalogues. The classic
examples were missing denominations, centre inverted, colour shades, centring
offset, double impression, mis-perforation and others. Used stamps with major errors could be valuables and rare.

Hidden Error that something would not
be seen easily or flaw in comparison with the acceptance quality or normal stamps features. These would be made well known through out lesson learned or philatelic studies such as unusual stamp
paper, missing parts of the stamp design, unusual or missing colour, misplaced or an inverted design element and others. Something apparently stranger things at the reverse of the stamps like unusual watermarked, inverted watermarks and
others, all these would be considered as a hidden error.

Errors stamp is most unique topic & difficult. Endless occurrence and unlimited values. Very subjected depends on individual perception and diagnosis.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. He did not know some peculiarities in what is considered a mistake or defect of the stamp of mail, mainly in relation to its real value. I would like to be able to show my mail stamps and have an evaluation of them, in this specific field, stamps with error. I have several and some in which I do not know if they will be in this category or if they will be fakes.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your feedback.
DeleteAs a beginner collector or philatelist, philatelic study is one of the most valuable things to determine the error and authentic of the stamps. You must have reference books or journal as well as specialized collection for that particular stamp. Numerous stamps with same face value and specification will enable to make comparison between each other. So you may discover some features are similar or not. Abnormal features are so-called error stamp but the basis must be same such as paper, cancellation, perforation and dimension.
Enjoy!
