Early Russia Stamps

The first stamp of the Russia Empire, vignette depicting coat of arm and the emblem of the Post Office, imperforates and watermark with colourless numeral “1” was officially used on 22 December 1857.

The early stamps from 1858 to 1888 was designed without thunderbolts across the post horns, using wove paper either with watermarked @ no watermarked or laid paper, watermarked & wavy lines.

The vertical laid paper is rarest as compared to horizontal laid and wove paper. However, some of wove paper issues are rare and high values. Stamps with groundwork inverted and omitted or unusual watermarked are also rare and high values.

There are various types of perforations, since these stamps are a little smaller than standard sizes, perforations are measured from the vertical outer frames.
