Overview
Prior
to World War I, Hungary together with Austria comprised the Austro-Hungarian
Empire. The Hungarian post became independent on May 1, 1867. During 1850~1871
stamps listed under Austria were also used in Hungary. (Source: Scott
Catalogue).
Hungary become fully independent after 1908, before 1908 Hungarian stamps were
used abroad covering Austria (Burgenland), Croatia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia,
West Ukraine and East Slovenia.
The
1st. edition of Hungary stamps were issued in 1871 and follow by
the 2nd. edition from 1871 ~ 1872, depicting King Franz Josef I,
King of Hungary. The 1st.
edition was printed use lithograph whereas 2nd. Edition use
typograph, both perforations 9 ½.
